Leadership Experience
 

I joined Theta Xi in my first semester as a way to make new friends, but the organization has done so much more for my leadership development. As president, being the person that everyone looks to for decisions and answers is both stressful and rewarding. I have added a blood drive to our philanthropy activities, raised chapter GPA to the all-Greek average, and established smoother transitions between officers by adding junior officers.

​Commonly, leaders are described as either relationship-oriented or task-oriented. However, the truly effective leaders are able to tailor their leadership to the given situation, knowing when to inspire individuals and when to push for results. This is the leadership that I work towards mastering in my roles. By my nature, I am very person oriented and place a great value on the human connection; this is true for both patients and coworkers. My leadership can be seen at its finest during high-pressure situations that require immediate action; it is in moments like this that can evaluate my ability to lead by examining the decisions I make at a moment's notice.

I have been involved with this program since I attended it in 2008, and believe it has been integral to my development at LSU. The program teaches incoming freshmen about school history, student organizations, and helps them transition to college. As an out of state student, it helped me to make new friends, explore opportunities to get involved, and step outside my shell. I served on staff for 1 year, then served on the executive staff. Our 6 member exec trained 60 staff members to hold a program for over 600 students lasting 2 weeks. I had individual responsibility for several educational events for the program as well as four service projects during and after the program.

When I learned that my class was to be the inaugural one, I became excited to be a part of something new. I was able to give feedback each step of the way, and really enjoyed being able to shape the program for future students. We heard from teachers, coastal researchers, physicians, politicians, journalists, and social workers. The idea was to gain a composite understanding of LA's problems and try to formulate plausible solutions. This inspired many of our service projects, which included taking on "reading buddies" and planting grass in the coastal wetlands. Poverty resonated with me the most, especially in the way it affects the education of young children. It forced me to acknowledge the world outside of college, and understand the plights of others. My experience with my reading buddy has influenced the service projects I coordinated in the following years, especially with Boys Hope Girls Hope of Baton Rouge.

Practical Applications of Advanced Leadership
Leadership Development Course (HRE 4724)
​Fall 2010 Semester

Service-learning course to fulfill leadership minor. Class was divided into groups of 7, and we were tasked with planning and executing a project of our own design with a community parter. Our partner was Southdowns Elementary, a school for mentally handicapped children. We hosted a fair for parents in which non-profit and other community organizations met with families to educate them about the low-cost resources available to them within their community. Each member elected his/her own duties in a collaborative manner. I contacted and coordinated with the 12 community partners, and worked to facilitate and guide group meetings.
